Butterflies 5 weeks in the making. For Easter Aunt Amy gave us the Butterfly kit. Immediately we sent away for our live caterpillars...4 days later the little guys arrived and the fun began.
We were impressed that the caterpillars seemed to grow overnight. Each morning we would check them to see how big they were and how much they'd moved around. The kit came with all the food the caterpillars would need so watching was our only chore...for now.
Finally after about 10 days all of our caterpillars had climbed up to the top of the container and spun a beautiful chrysalis.
After every one was "napping" we moved the cocoons into the butterfly net and waited for the new butterflies to emerge.
Days later, more than we cared to wait, our first butterfly broke free. It was amazing to see the new wings pump and unfurl.
Feeding time! Our new butterflies needed to be fed. We mixed up a sugar water solution and sprinkled it like dew onto some flowers then added the plate to the cage.
Butterflies have a short life span so after 2 short weeks it was time to release our friends. Ethan postponed the release for days, which turned out OK because lots of visitors got to see our beauties. It was hard for Ethan to let his first pets go, but he was brave and carefully helped the last butterflies find a new home.
Just a few short minutes in my flower pots and they were gone...good bye Painted Ladies! We sure enjoyed having you around!

So fun! We have the same kit. 2 of our butterflies emerged today and I bet the others come tonight. It is fun to watch the kids ooh and aahh over them.
What a fun project. And it sounds like ethan did an awesome job taking care of the butterflies.
